The transformers, one of the key elements in a substation, are manufactured generally with insulation paper and insulating liquid. The life expectancy of the transformer will depend on the insulating materials shape, for this reason, it is important to apply techniques to reduce the moisture content in the transformer, just like the online drying system that it’s presented here.
This is a preventive method whose main objective is to maintain in a good shape an important element as the transformer is.
Conventional methods for removing moisture, for example oil treatments plants are focused on the fast oil drying, however and 98% of the moisture is in fact stored in the cellulose insulation.
The online drying system SITRAM DRY removes the insulating oil moisture, through the moisture equilibrium alteration, by diffusing the moisture from the cellulose insulation to the dry insulating oil, removing slowly the moisture from the solid insulation, as well it is capable to reduce the oil transformer moisture since 500 ppm to less than 10 ppm. This process not only reduces the aging speed of the cellulose, but will also improve the dielectric strength and it can to increase the reliability of the transformer and its life expectancy.
Benefits for new transformers
The SITRAM DRY installed on new transformers can maintain the moisture content in or below to original 0.5% of the factory. The system can extend significantly the transformer life expectancy in a fraction of the substitution value.
Benefit for used or wet transformers (>2%)
The transformers under operation used to have elevated moisture levels, so the objective is to reduce the moisture content to an acceptable level, and then to maintaining on that level. The required time to achieve the right moisture level will depend on the size, moisture content, and the operating temperature variation.
SITRAM DRY is a robust system which requires very low maintenance. Thanks to the sensors on the input and output, the cartridges saturations can be accurately defined. The cartridges replacements are really rapid thanks to the efficient coupling.
